About this example

The interactive example and the career story are two different things.

The design thinking

Start with what a customer needs to know and do

The five areas — clarity, contact path, mobile, local discovery and follow-up — are the basics I check first on any small-business site. Areas marked “Not yet” rank above “Partly”, and areas tied to the owner’s chosen priorities move up the list.

The real-world story

Where it came from

I design and build websites for small businesses and professionals, and I care about this work because I grew up around a family small business. This demo is not an automated assessment of any real website; the businesses are fictional.

What a real version would need

  • A conversation with the owner about goals, customers and capacity
  • Testing the real site on a phone and following its main call to action
  • Checking listings and hours where customers actually search
  • A plan the owner can maintain after launch
