Attendance Points Sandbox

Adjust a fictional attendance policy and see how invented records respond. Every total explains itself, and the tool only flags cases for a person to review.

What this shows: rule transparency, rolling-window logic, banked credit, a simulated manager view and human-review guardrails.

Attendance Points Sandbox

This sandbox lets you adjust a fictional attendance policy (grace period, point values, a rolling window and banked credit) and watch how invented employee records change. It flags cases for a human to review and never recommends discipline. Turn on JavaScript to use it.

About this example

The interactive example and the career story are two different things.

The design thinking

Explain the rule, not just the number

A point total on its own invites arguments. The ledger shows each event, the rule applied and why an event did or didn’t count — within the grace period, outside the rolling window, or excluded as protected leave.

The status labels stop at “Heads-up conversation” and “Flag for HR review”. The model organizes information; people make decisions. There is no discipline recommendation anywhere in the tool.

The real-world story

Where it came from

This sandbox grew out of my People & Culture work with attendance tracking. The public version is a reconstruction for illustration: the people, events, thresholds and point values are invented and do not reflect any employer’s policy or records.

What a real version would need

  • HR and legal review of the actual policy and its wording
  • Separate handling for protected absences, accommodations and local law
  • Access limited to the people who need it, with an audit trail of changes
  • A documented review step before any conversation or action
